Haroshi
In 2018, Keith Hufnagel brought Haroshi to the Modernica Factory to work on the iconic HUF Middle Finger. Modernica set Haroshi up with an area inside our wood-shop so he could work on the middle finger for two weeks, and since then, we have been working together to create this project. The unique chair features a wood base with a gradient color palette made of Maple Skateboarding veneers. Modernica engineered a new manufacturing process for the wood bending of the Spyder base and designed a custom-sized mold tailored to accommodate the unique plys. Modernica utilized wood materials similar to what Haroshi uses daily for sculpting, ensuring that the best Maple Skateboard Veneers were sourced. Each veneer was custom-dyed to match Haroshi's color palette to maintain the vibrancy of their high-pressure and high-heat wood-bending machine. Additionally, Modernica’s Wood Shop made a wood branding stamp featuring Haroshi Guzo character, placed at the chair's base. Each chair has a dark-to-light gradient feature from the inner to outer plys while featuring colors that taper away towards the bottom of each chair. The shell is enhanced by a custom fiberglass color that complements the outside layer of Natural Maple plys. To create the fiberglass shell, Modernica's Fiberglass department worked with Haroshi to hand mix resin and pigments to create an all-new fiberglass color that has never been used before. The chair is finished with a plaque, hand-engraved by Haroshi's himself, featuring his signature and individually numbered. This chair is limited to an edition of only 100 and released May 27th, 2023 After 5 years in the making, we are honored to release our latest Artist Collaboration with @Haroshi. Modernica visited Haroshi at his studio in Tokyo Japan to film this documentary describing the 5 year process & creative ideas behind the project. We are so honored to have the opportunity to do this and share with the world. Please enjoy. #Modernica #Haroshi

During September 2021 Modernica had the pleasure of working with acclaimed photographer Atiba Jefferson on a unique project crossing photography with functional furniture. Modernica and Atiba collaborated on a year-long project, merging some of his favorite skateboarding images and featured them on our timeless furniture, including a Case Study® Side Shell Fiberglass Chair, Fiberglass Coffee Table & Fiberglass Wall Pockets. For the first time, Modernica uses the Case Study® Wall Pocket as a Frame for his work. These functional wall pockets initially designed for office use have become a housing mechanism for his iconic images. Along with the 15 Wall Pockets, Atiba & Modernica have created a Fiberglass Coffee Table featuring all 15 images laid out to mimic a light-box vibe that showcases the photos all on one piece. For the past 20 years photographer, Atiba Jefferson has been known for capturing iconic moments in pop culture to some of the most influential people in the music and sports world. From being a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Lakers and capturing some of the most memorable moments in Kobe & Shaq's championship days to the streets of NYC shooting the Supreme skate team, his portfolio features the best of the best. With a small run of hand-signed items, only four select Wall Pockets along with the Fiberglass Coffee Table edition of 10 & Case Study® Side Shell Chair edition of 50 were available for purchase while supplies last. Atiba had also asked Modernica to Honor his late friend Dylan Rieder by donating all Proceeds of his limited-edition Wall Pocket to the City of Hope Cancer Center.

October 2022 Legendary surfboard maker and resin artist Gene Cooper has teamed up with Modernica to create an Edition of 100 Case Study® Furniture Side Shell Chairs. Gene’s known in the surfboard industry for his fiberglass resin art that he applies during the laminating process. A board builder since 1974 he introduced Cooperfish Surfboards in 1992. The label quickly set a standard for craftsmanship and color work reminiscent of surfings transitional era of the 1960’s. His boards, hand crafted and always in limited supply are coveted, and they’ve landed in the hands of diehard surfers, surfboard collectors, and surfing museums. “Shaping surfboards and doing the resin work has always been a labor of love for me. The crew I’ve been working with at Modernica share the same love for their artistry and I have great respect for them and their level of craftsmanship. The process of making each chair, working with this crew, for me, is pure fun. Exploring the color palette and the endless possible combinations make each chair unique, which is very rewarding. I thank Jay and the people at Modernica for this opportunity” - Gene Cooper
