Architecture Spotlight:
Tianjin Binhai Public Library

A futuristic public library has opened its doors in Tianjin Binhai, China, and the world stands in awe through a photographic tour.

A striking building shaped like a 3D eye has taken over social media lately. MVRDV have, with the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI), designed Tianjin Binhai Library as part of a larger plan of five buildings to provide a cultural district for the city. The 33,700m² cultural center featuring a luminous spherical auditorium around which floor-to-ceiling bookcases cascade holding 1.2 million books. The undulating bookshelf is the building’s main design element, not only as a visual interest but also as a practical one, framing the space, creating stairs, seating, the layered ceiling and even louvres on the façade.

We look forward to seeing the other structures that will join this impressive library in the future, in the meantime, enjoy the images above via MVRDV.
